Get on Board the Tacolicious Train

I'd heard about Tacolicious before. They're at the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market on Thursday, they're always doing cool special guest chef tacos there, and they're constantly being talked about on Twitter, including a recent tweet by @davkyl, which I enjoyed, "If Beretta f***** a Mexican taco cart in Ensenada, you would have Tacolicious. That place can hang even by the SoCal-Mexican-food standard." Not sure what most of that means, but couldn't have said it any better.

So yesterday, I tried it with a few friends.

Verdict: Tacolicious is indeed delicious.

Starting off with the free chips and salsa they bring out. What a way to start the experience. They're free, they're warm and salty and the salsa is delicious. On top of that, we tried the guacamole. Another success. So creamy with just the right amount of onion, tomato and lemon/lime juice.

On to the tacos. They were all frickin awesome, but here are a few highlights:

Fish taco - Having lived in San Diego for a while, I have high expectations. This taco met them all. Batter was nice and light and tangy crema sauce gave it an unbelievable flavor. Adding the yellow (I think habanero tumeric) sauce bumped it up another level.

Chorizo-Potato - Great, house made chorizo. So succulent that you really don't need anything else on it. Great flavor, great kick, I wanted to eat 10 of them.

Braised Beef Short Rib - First of all, the beef being grass fed is awesome. You can suck this taco down and feel good about the meat you just ate. The meat had so much flavor and was so tender. Every bite provided an incredible rush of juices, tasting kind of chocolate-earthy.

Overall, I'm not sure you can beat this place. They take tacos, spice them up with a few fancy twists and make the customer beg for more. I'm not too proud to beg and neither should you. Go in, get many tacos and enjoy yourself, you'll be glad you did.
