Airline Food ≠ 5 Star Dining

If you are a frequent flier and like to indulge in an occasional tasty meal on the flight, maybe you should reconsider. The USA Today posted this article yesterday talking about how disgusting some major airline caterers are, including Sky Chefs and Gourmet Gate.

In the FDA's findings (from over 6 months ago), they found numerous instances of improper food handling and unsafe/unsanitary conditions. A few questions come to mind:

1) Why are we only hearing about this now? - Many of the findings come from over 2 years ago. Did the FDA really need to wait for the USA Today to request inspection reports to tell us about this? Even though they issued warnings and citations, I would have liked to know that there was Listeria in my roast beef au jus.

2) People eat chilean sea bass and filet mignon on planes? - This just seems like a bad idea. I realize people have to eat and some people want the best, but if you can't wait a few hours to scarf down your filet mignon then so be it. Who do you think is cooking your airplane food, Wolfgang Puck?

3) Are we really that surprised? - Let's be realistic for a moment. Airports are not clean to begin with and airplanes are not five star restaurants. These airline caterers are cranking out millions of meals a day (much more than your neighborhood restaurant). The cooks most likely did not go to Le Cordon Bleu and they probably don't care if you find that your shrimp salad has a side of bacteria.

With that being said, I'm not condoning these disgusting findings and I absolutely think there need to be some major changes with the food we eat on planes and how's it cooked/handled. Until this happens, I will be sticking to the ol packaged peanuts and bottled water as my meal of choice.

  1. All food handlers in those airlines need to know how the work they do can affect the safety of the food and the health of their costumers.
